Mental Representations: A mental model of a stimulus or category of stimuli
Sensory representations
Image of a shoe
Sound of a gun shot
Verbal representations
Concept of “Freedom”
Involve neural activation different from that of
sensory representation
Motoric representations
Memories of motor actions
Swinging a tennis racket
Figure 2. The Information Processing Model of Memory
- Memory is the process by which we observe, store, and recall information
- Memories may be visual, auditory, or tactile
- Memory processes may involve multiple systems
- Conscious
- Automatic
Distributed cognition
1. Cognitive processes may be distributed across themembers of a social group.
2.Cognitive processes may be distributed in the sense
that the operation of the cognitive system involves
coordination between internal and external (material
or environmental) structure.
3. Processes may be distributed through time in such a
way that the products of earlier events can transform
the nature of related events.
Distributed cognition is seen when using the camera to take photos. When the photo is of someone else, the cognitive process is distributed on both individuals, as the event requires coordination of two people. While operating the machinery, the photographer also pays attention to the environment(eg, evaluating the varying light conditions).Cognition is distributed on both internal and external representations. In my earlier experience of using cameras, the miro lens are often used to shoot flowers. So when I see the button with a flower icon on the new camera related it to the function of miro-focus.This is the distributed cognition over time.
